Poseidon – The God Of The Sea

In Greek mythology, Poseidon is famed for being the god of the sea. Poseidon was the son of Cronus, the god of time, and Rhea, the goddess of the earth. He is one of six siblings who divided the power of the world. While Zeus governed the heavens, while Hades ruled Hell, or the underworld, and Poseidon got the sea. He was also the god of horses and the god of earthquakes. The major symbols associated with Poseidon include tridents, uniquely designed fish spears and dolphins.

Sailors Relied On Poseidon For Good Voyage At Sea

Because he was the undisputed king of the sea, sailors and other sea travelers often drowned horses in sacrifice of his honor. Most seamen and sailors at that time also relied upon him for a safe and uneventful voyage. Poseidon lived in a large palace made of gems and corals, and he also rode on a horse-driven chariot.

Poseidon was often referred to as a very temperamental and moody god, therefore whenever he was in a sour or angry mood, he became very violent, and would often strike the ground with a trident which caused earthquakes, shipwrecks and tempestuous seas. Whenever he was in a good mood, the seas were calm, and he also created new lands in water.

Poseidon Also Fathered Numerous Offspring

Just like his brother Zeus, Poseidon also had a charm and masculinity that enamored him to many women. He was known to have numerous love affairs with many women, which led him to father numerous children. He was married to Nereid, Amphitrite, and he even had a child with the Gorgon Medusa. He also raped Aethra, and Amymone. Poseidon was also notorious for having affair with his sister Demeter. Poseidon often pursued Demeter, who turned herself into a mare so that Poseidon won’t find him. Poseidon however, transformed himself into a stallion, and finally captured her. The affair resulted in a horse named Arion.

Poseidon And His Competition Between Athena

Poseidon, according to legend, also competed for supremacy with Athena, the goddess of war. The two competed for control of the city of Athens. To win over the people of Athens, Poseidon threw his spear to the ground, and this brought forth the Spring of Acropolis. Athena won over the people of Athens however, because she gave them the olive tree. The two however, eventually worked together, and combined their powers. Athena built the first ship that was used to sail on the sea, and she also built the first chariot, even though Poseidon was also the god of horses.

According to experts of Greek mythology, Poseidon is often compared to Neptune, the Roman God of the sea. Poseidon was also credited for creating the Zebra, which was a result of one of his experiments with equine research. And although Poseidon was often moody and unpredictable, he was often times very cooperative, and helped the Greeks during the Trojan War. In modern cinema, he was also featured in the movie Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief, where he is the father of Percy.
