Intentional or an Accident? Bollywood’s Remakes of Hollywood Movies

“Hindi Cinema” most commonly known as Bollywood is one of the largest film industries in the world with one of the biggest centers of film production. It is an industry which is expected to earn $4.5 billion in revenue by 2016, triple the amount made in 2004. Filled with talent, colours and utter creativity, Bollywood exceeds Hollywood by the amount of tickets sold globally. Then why copy? Here are five movies that Bollywood very unsuccessfully copied off Hollywood.

1. “Dhamaal” also known as “Rat Race” in Hollywood

“Dhamaal”, a movie directed by Indra Kumar in 2007, is what lots of viewers have been calling a “Copy-paste” of “Rat Race”, a movie directed by Jerry Zucker in 2001. The movies are based on a rich man who reveals a location that hides grand amounts of money to people in order to get a race going. A race with no rules apart from one: The first one wins.

2. “Players” also known as “The italian job” in Hollywood.

Directed by Abbas Alibhai Burmawalla and Mastan Alibhai Burmawalla, Players was released in 2012, and with a current rating of 4.0 by IMDB, it still remains a movie with less thrill than The italian job, which currently holds a rating of 7.0 and was released way back in 2003. This movie directed by F. Gary Gray tells the story of Charlie Croker, a man left for dead in Italy who gathers a team and plans a gold theft against an old ally. With a few minor changes, Abbas and Mastan Burmawalla portray the same plot for Players.

3. “Dil Bole Hadippa” also known as “She’s the man” in Hollywood.

Starring Rani Mukerji and Shahid Kapoor, two of Bollywood’ best, Anurag Singh directed “Dil Bole Haddipa” in 2009, telling the story of a female cricket expert who joins the men’s team to win a local India – Pakistan match, however ends up falling for the coach. In “She’s the man”, directed by Andy Fickman in 2006, disguised as her brother, Viola Davis subsitutes her brother at his first class boarding school to play soccer against her old school’s soccer team, but very soon ends up falling for her soccer teammate.

4. “Naina” also known as “The eye” in Hollywood.

Released in 2005, three years after the realease of “The Eye” (2002), “Naina” was directed by Shripal Morakhia who very strongly copies Danny Pang’s story of a blind female who receives an eye transplant that can now not only open her eyes to the real world, but also the supernatural world.

5. “God Tussi Great Ho” also known as “Bruce Almighty” in Hollywood.

With iconic actors such as Amitabh Bhachchan, Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra, Rumi Jaffery, director of “God Tussi Great Ho” (2008) copied the story of “Bruce Almighty” directed by Tom Shadyac in 2003 about a man who is persistent on blaming God for all his problems, and is soon given God’s powers for a certain amount of time to understand the effort taken to keep everyone happy and run the world.
